Customers stepped into the Denver Public Library’s (DPL) newest location for the first time last month. Drawn by its calming hues of blue and green, the walls invite the community to explore the library and provide the perfect backdrop for a twinkling array of colorful book spines. Mini “ofrendas” (altars) paired with books about learning line the walls. Pictures of a friendly face shine throughout the building, welcoming visitors.
That face is Lena Archuleta, a cherished Latina leader known for her passion for providing equal educational opportunities for English learning children. She is now the namesake of Denver Public Library’s first location named after a Latina, the second in the Westwood neighborhood, and the 28th overall in the city.

Thanks to Denver voters and the 2021 RISE Denver Bond, DPL opened the $6.08 million library in November. The library is now part of a community hub of services. Equipped with movable shelving units that allow for flexible programming throughout the roughly 6,000-square-foot library and several bookable study spaces, the Lena Archuleta Branch Library realizes what many in the Westwood neighborhood have been asking for years: more library services that complement the established Westwood Branch Library.
The Lena Archuleta Branch Library joins other organizations housed on the Blossom House campus. The campus is part of Lifespan Local, a nonprofit dedicated to serving underserved communities. Among the services available at Blossom House are a communal kitchen, a dedicated youth space, an early childhood care center, and a hydroponic farm. Opportunities for special programming, unlike any at Denver Public Library’s other locations, are possible thanks to this unique setup.
Blocks away from the new library is the Mi Casa Resource Center, an organization that has supported West Denver families for nearly 50 years. Poetically, the organization was founded by Lena L. Archuleta, among other notable Denver Latino pioneer activists, like author Juana Bordas.
Community Celebration Welcomes the New Lena Archuleta Branch Library

A grand opening celebration introducing the library to the neighborhood began with a ceremonial welcome dance by the neighborhood dance group Kalpulli Mikakuikatl Danza Mexica. Throughout the day, echoes of Lena Archuleta could be seen and felt in every corner. Decorations and signage featured hidden stars honoring her dance group, Las Estrellitas Alegres (“The Happy Little Stars”). Local dancers from In Lak’ech Denver Arts performed a tribute to her love of dance, while author Juana Bordas and District 3 Councilmember Jamie Torres shared memories of knowing the inspirational leader.
Inspired by Lena’s story, City Librarian Nicolle Davies shared during her remarks the exciting potential of the new library. “Lena Archuleta was a pillar of the community and an education champion,” she said. “We are so proud to introduce our newest branch, which is named after this powerhouse of a woman.”
The new Denver Public Library location promises to shine bright in the community and follow the path set by its north star, Lena L. Archuleta. Visit the new Lena Archuleta Branch Library to explore programs and services available to the Denver and Westwood community. Find the library's hours here.
