This month: Yojimbo (1961)

"He wanted a drink of water. They wanted a hero."

After a nameless ronin happens upon a devastated country village, he quickly becomes ensnared in its violent rivalry between two opposing Yakuza bosses. Quickly discovering that not only he, but the town, can equally profit off these criminals permanent removal, this hardened samurai begins to carefully carryout his plan for the town's ultimate liberation, righting scores of injustice for the town's citizens in the process.

The film that inspired Sergio Leone's classic A Fistful of Dollars (1964), setting the tone for many of Italy's successive genre-bending "Spaghetti Westerns," here is master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and legendary screen actor Toshiro Mifune at quite possibly their most iconic. A film that 1968 Columbia, Maryland deemed too violent for viewing, DPL proudly presents: Yojimbo!
