You are charged a daily fine for each item not returned or renewed by its due date. The Library will attempt to notify you when an item is overdue. Fines are accrued at 20 cents per day, per item. The maximum fine charged is $3 per item, per checkout period.
Fines may be paid at any Denver Public Library location. We accept cash, checks (made out to Manager of Finance) and credit cards (MasterCard, Discover or VISA). Payment may also be mailed to any location, sent to the attention of the Circulation Department. Fines may be paid over the phone by calling 720-865-1325 during regular Central Library hours. At this time, online payment of fines is not available.
If you have lost an item you will be responsible for paying a standard replacement fee based on the type of materials lost (paperback, DVD, etc.), and you may be charged overdue fines that have accrued on the lost item. Replacement items are not accepted for lost or damaged materials.
Juvenile and Young Adult Items, MY Denver Card
The Library does not charge overdue fines on juvenile and young adult materials (materials with call numbers beginning with j or Y), but items will be declared lost on the 28th day overdue. An appropriate replacement fee will be assessed on the 28th day. No overdue fines are charged, however, once a lost item is returned. There will be no late fees assessed to items checked out on a MY Denver Card.
It is the borrower's responsibility to make sure that each case contains all discs before returning audiovisual materials. If an item is returned missing one or more pieces, we will try to contact you. If the problem hasn't been resolved within 15 days of the return of the item, you will be charged for the missing piece(s) or, in some cases, the entire item. No fee adjustments or refunds will be offered for materials returned after this 15-day period.
Library materials should be returned in good condition. Replacement and processing fees will be assessed to the borrower account for items returned in damaged condition. Replacement items are not accepted for lost or damaged materials. Damage includes but is not limited to:
- Water damage
- Burned or ripped covers, cases or pages
- Ripped or removed labels, barcodes or RFID tags
- Dirt, sand, food or other substances adhered to materials
- Highlighting or underlining of text
- Smoke odor and/or residue
- Bed bugs or other pests
You cannot check out or renew materials if you have fines or fees totaling $5 or more, your library account is in "collections" or you have an incorrect address and/or telephone number on your library record.
Library card accounts with fines and/or fees totaling $25 or more may be sent to a collection agency for further action. A fee of $10 will be added to your account to cover collection costs.
Special Loan Fees
Some Interlibrary Loan items have a checkout fee. The fee amount is up to the owning library and must be approved by the customer before the item is requested from the owning library. Special loan fees must be paid at the time of checkout.
Avoid Fines. Use My Account to sign up for email or text messaging notification and courtesy notices will be sent 2 days before an item is overdue.
