Stewardship in Action

Denver Public Library (DPL) is committed to the responsible use of its resources. Denverites trust us to provide access to resources and materials that both inform and entertain. As part of our commitment to being good stewards of our collection and taxpayer dollars, we are making a couple of changes to digital borrowing in support of increased access and to help reduce wait times. These changes also align with neighboring public library systems.

Our digital borrowing updates effective Saturday, November 1 include:

eCard Changes
eCards registered after October 3, 2025 will now expire six months after registration, shortened from four years to ensure that Denver users are prioritized. eCards registered before October 3, 2025 are set to expire on April 30, 2026, so users are encouraged to visit any DPL location to get a permanent card before that time.

Libby Changes
While providing access to Libby for Denverites is essential,  many aren’t aware that libraries pay up to three times more for digital books than consumers. Most eBooks also expire after a set time period or number of checkouts. In order to meet the increased demand for eBooks, and to ensure digital resources remain available to all customers, we will be making the following changes to digital borrowing:

  • reducing the number of holds allowed from 15 to 7.
  • reducing the number of checkouts allowed from 20 to 10.

Reducing holds and checkouts per card will free up materials faster for other customers. You will not lose current holds or checkouts, but will be unable to place additional holds until fewer than 7 holds remain on your account.

Pro Tips:

  • If you have an eCard registered before October 3, 2025:
    • Gather your proof of address and photo ID
    • Head into a location to get your permanent card before April 30, 2026
  • If you are a Denver county resident and are unable to get to a location, please contact Home Delivery for support
  • Are you a Libby user? Avoid reaching limits by using the tags feature to save titles for future reading
