Since 2020, book publishers have focused more on digital audiobook production. As a result, library distributors have a very limited selection of new audiobooks on CD. Public libraries across the U.S. are now looking for ways to keep their collections up to date.
As of September 20, 2025, Denver Public Library (DPL) is retiring audiobooks on CDs. We are making space for other growing physical collections. Retired audiobook CDs will be available for resale through our Denver Public Library Friends Foundation.
Rest assured that DVD, Blu-ray, and music CDs will stay with us for the foreseeable future. Additionally, you can still enjoy audiobooks of new and classic titles from your favorite authors using Libby—plus, meet Playaways, our newest audiobook format.
If you are a regular audiobook on CD listener, here are some ways you can keep listening:
- Download the Libby App on your mobile device
- Listen to Overdrive on your computer
- Checkout a Playaway at any DPL location
- Request audiobooks on CD from other libraries
- If you have physical limitations, ask us about the Colorado Talking Book Library
