The panopticon : a novel

by Jenni Fagan

Reviewer Rating:

The Panopticon is an untraditional thriller about Anais Hendricks, a 15 year old juvenile delinquent. The novel takes place in what appears to be Scotland, given the heavy and realistically curse-word ridden accent that lends heavily to the atmosphere and mood of the book.

England, Great Britain, United Kingdom: What's the Difference?

Map of the UK: England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland.

Sometimes you find answers in unexpected places. I found the most succinct description I've ever seen of how England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom relate to each other in a library newsletter about travel guidebooks:

London is the capital of England.

England is a country.

Britain is an area that consists of England and the country of Wales.

  • Great Britain is the name of the island that is home to the countries of England, Wales, and Scotland.
  • The United Kingdom (UK) is a country that is a union of the countries on the island of Great Britain, along with the country of Northern Ireland (which shares the island of Ireland with the Republic of Ireland.)
  • [The Republic of Ireland is] a separate country that is not part of the UK.
  • London is also the capital of the UK.

I'm the sort of person who really likes music, but who doesn't really care a lot about bands. My friends (who are in a very good band called My God Micah) must get exasperated with me because I never know who sings any song and am totally clueless about which bands play what shows where.

Slip of the knife : a novel

by Denise Mina

Reviewer Rating:

Like the rest of the titles in her series, I really enjoyed this most recent mystery by the Scottish writer, Denise Mina. Her protagonist, Paddy Meehan, is a Scottish journalist/writer and in this book she unravels the mystery behind the murder of a friend and fellow journalist, Terry. Meehan is...
