Are you curious about First Aid and helping others during a medical emergency? If so, The Denver Public Library and other community resources have videos, books, training, classes, and other resources to help you.

Denver Public Library Resources

Udemy offers online classes about First Aid such as: “First Aid Masterclass: A Complete Guide to First Aid”, which covers topics such as: Saving People from Choking, Applying Bandages, Tourniquets, and Dressings for Bleeds. There's another class called simply: “First Aid”, which goes over the basics of what to have in a First Aid Kit, among other topics. There are even First Aid classes for Parents and Caregivers of Children, and First Aid for Pets. You must have a physical Denver Public Library Card to use Udemy (see more information here), and to find these classes, search for "First Aid" –in quotation marks– once you log in.

You can check out the eMagazine entitled: "First Aid: Your Need to Know Guide" from Libby.This publication has sections about addressing strokes, burns, lacerations, and many other topics. It also contains a handy checklist for key first aid kit items. 

Kanopy (available to Denver residents only) has a streaming video entitled "Basic First Aid". This video covers breathing emergencies, cuts, burns, chest pain, fractures, and more.

Mango Languages enables you to learn, brush up, and/or practice your vocabulary for emergency situations, like asking for aid, and offering medical aid to people. More than 50 languages are available.

MedlinePlus is an online health information resource for patients and their families and friends. It is a service of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world's largest medical library, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It has a comprehensive listing of resources to learn more about First Aid.

There are a plethora of books and other materials about First Aid in our collection, including historical first aid, wilderness first aid, First Aid books written for kids, and psychological first aid.

Other Resources

The City and County of Denver Office of Emergency Management offers Emergency Preparedness Classes, including "Stop the Bleed" courses. Check out their calendar here.

UC Health offers classes (search on First Aid) throughout Colorado and the Denver metro area.

The local American Heart Association and the American Red Cross chapters also offer classes that you can attend both online and in person, including CPR classes. 

And many workplaces, schools, and community centers offer free first aid classes, so exploring what's available in your neighborhood or through your employer may be a great starting point.
