Holiday Sounds of Gospel Music

Nothing kickstarts the winter season more than holiday music! For the 21st year, local radio station KOSI 101.1 has made the switch to all holiday music until the end of December. And the titular Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey, has put together a holiday tour which will of course feature that earworm "All I Want for Christmas is You." But what about the holiday and Christmas tunes that might not make it on the airwaves?

Inspired by Damien Sneed's upcoming stop at DU's Newman Center in his seven-date Joy to the World: A Christmas Musical Journey tour, our local musicologist Andrew has put together his picks for holiday (or anytime!) listens, many in the gospel music genre. Here are just a few highlights - you can find the complete list here.

  • The Motown Gospel Christmas album delivers soulful renditions of Christmas classics, the likes of which you have never heard before. Blending Gospel and R&B, this 9-track album takes you on a sonic journey through the decades.
  • Check out SOZO Playlists: Christmas - an all new collection of some of the best Christmas songs from today's top artists in an expertly curated collection appropriate for the whole family. This compilation includes both traditional holiday songs and new inspirational tunes from a variety of artists.
  • Welcome the holiday season with music from CeCe Winans. The album's producer, Alvin Love III, won a Grammy and Dove Award for his work on CeCe's most recent multiple award-winning album, Let Them Fall In Love. Love is known for seamlessly meshing musical styles that have multi-generational appeal and his signature sound is showcased on Something's Happening - A Christmas Album with CeCe's pristine vocals surrounded by lush orchestral arrangements.

And don't forget about our Music Online database, which has thousands of winter holiday songs and collections to stream, everything from Irish harps to carillon to dulcimer. If you  have a favorite holiday song, let us know about it in the Comments section below!
