Application to Become a Read Aloud Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Denver Public Library Read Aloud Program!

The process to become a Read Aloud Volunteer has 4 different steps:

  1. Read Aloud Application and a brief phone interview
  2. Background check and Volunteer Agreement Forms
  3. Mandatory Training (multiple dates and times available)
  4. Classroom placement based on availability and program needs

IMPORTANT! If you are selected to become a volunteer, you agree to meet all of the following requirements and expectations:

  • Complete a Background Check and Volunteer Agreement Form
  • Attend ONE of the online mandatory trainings:
    • Tuesday, June 24th, 10am  to 12pm
    • Wednesday July 9th, 12pm to 2pm
    • Tuesday, August 12th, 5pm to 7pm
  • Volunteer during school hours weekdays 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Each Read Aloud session is only 30 minutes.
  • Commit to providing storytimes on a regular basis at preschool classrooms in Denver.
  • Read with preschoolers aged 3-5 using engaging strategies.
  • Maintain a library account in good standing.
  • Attend refresher training once every three years.
  • Communicate with Read Aloud staff by reading and responding to emails.
  • Add developmentally beneficial activities into stoytime such as singing, sharing rhymes, and dancing along with books.

The Read Aloud Program strives to fairly meet the needs of all of Denver’s preschoolers. To do this well, we want to understand more about our Read Aloud Volunteers. Your answers will help us set goals around recruiting volunteers from diverse backgrounds and communities in the Denver area.

Please know that the following questions are entirely optional and the information collected will only be accessible by library staff directly working with the Read Aloud program. Insights from this data will be reported at an aggregate level and used to set goals around recruiting volunteers from all of the diverse backgrounds and communities in Denver.
