Japanese Breakfast

For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women) is the fourth studio album by American indie pop band Japanese Breakfast. The album is the band's follow-up to 2021's Grammy-nominated Jubilee, which explored happier feelings than their first two albums. The songs, by lead singer and author Michelle Zauner, are said to return to a darker, "gothic-gloomy" melancholy inspired by the "psychic state of poets on the verge of inspiration." Recorded at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, the album is the band's first to be recorded in a professional studio setting, instead of in-home studios and other improvised locations. Zauner worked with producer Blake Mills, best known for his works with Bob Dylan and Fiona Apple. It features the singles, "Orlando in Love" and "Mega Circuit.”

Thao

A Man Alive is the fourth studio album by alternative folk band Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. The subject matter of the album was inspired by Thao Nguyen's relationship with her estranged father; however, the album is upbeat in its musical approach. The decision to pair personal subject matter with upbeat music was a conscious one, inspired by reactions to the band's live performances. "The most fulfilling parts of our live show, that we love the most and what the crowd seemed to love the most were beat and bass driven. I wanted to move away from chordally based songs, and I wanted to rely more heavily on the beat and the groove. We wanted to pay more tribute to hip-hop influences...Once I realized what this record would be about, then it was definitely a non-negotiable in that it would be fun to perform."

Dustin Wong

Gloria is the latest album by LA-based composer/producer/guitarist Dustin Wong. Wong has established a multifaceted career over the last two decades that encompasses his solo work centered around guitar performance and live looping, roles as a guitarist in Baltimore-based bands Ponytail and Ecstatic Sunshine, and a wide catalog of collaborations. In composing his solo music, Wong has always transmuted his own life experiences into the thematic source material for emotionally resonant works rippling with fine-grain details and intricate looping architectures. With Gloria, the composer channels specific memories and pieces of his family history into a deeply personal narrative arc focused on his grandmother Gloria Violet Lee Wong, who passed away in January 2024, just shy of her 96th birthday. Using a road trip they took together down the west coast of America in 2023 as the direct inspiration for the individual scenes and flashes of imagery that form the album’s continuously unfolding structure, Wong presents Gloria as a memorial to her storied life and a celebration of the warmth and kindness that characterized their close relationship.
