Caregiving for Someone Living With Dementia

Caring for someone living with dementia is filled with challenges, but understanding the disease and knowing a few dos and don'ts can help you meet those challenges and even experience some joy and meaning in the process. 

In this series, Samantha Farro of the Division of Geriatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine will help you understand how the disease is impacting your loved one and will provide you with strategies for getting through each day. The last session will be a celebration of the community and connection that we have created together.

• Understanding the Disease (June 6 from 11:30 to 12:30 on Zoom): Caregivers are often faced with confusing and challenging behaviors from their loved ones. Gaining knowledge and learning about the nature of neurodegenerative diseases can offer freedom. • Dementia and Communication (June 13 from 11:30 to 12:30 on Zoom): Communicating with someone who is experiencing dementia symptoms presents unique challenges. It is not uncommon for things to escalate into anger and frustration. In this session, we will identify concrete strategies for how to manage when things go unexpectedly. Register below!
• Real Strategies for Not Losing Yourself in Caregiving (June 20 from 11:30 to 12:30 on Zoom): It is not uncommon for caregivers to feel a loss of self. In this session, we discuss the importance and real need to maintain dignity and a sense of meaning when faced with challenges. We also discuss strategies to empower you in the face of uncertainties. • Celebration with Music and Art! (June 27 from 1:30 to 2:30 in person at the Virginia Village Branch Library): People who live with dementia often experience isolation and loneliness, as do the people who care for them. In this special in person session, we create community and connection with each other! Everyone is invited -- care partners along with their loved ones who live with the disease.
