Game of Thrones Returns

Game of Thrones Season 3

The wait for season three is over! HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series has returned with new episodes.

The anticipation for the new season has increased each time HBO released a teaser trailer (five of them!) or piece of news (Diana Rigg joins the cast!). Season three, loosely based on the first half of Book 3, A Storm of Swords, promises more of the action, intrigue, romance (and dragons!) we’ve come to expect from this series.

Terry Pratchett, not just for reading!

The Color of Magic

For years I have tried and failed to make it all the way through a Terry Pratchett novel, but his movies, now that's another story...

I don't know why, I try and try yet Pratchett's novels are just beyond me. I love witty books, I love quirky British novels, I like footnotes and random asides in fiction but I just cannot read Terry Pratchett, but his movies, now those I can get behind.

While Kenneth Branagh's 1989 Henry V itself was not a Hollywood production, its critical and commercial success led to a new wave of Shakespeare adaptations.

Franco Zeffirelli's 1990 Hamlet is something of an exception--it completed Zeffirelli's Shakespeare trilogy. He started it in the sixties with Taming of the Shrew and Romeo and Juliet.

For the early 1990s, Branagh was the popular face of Shakespeare--he adapted Much Ado About Nothing in 1993 and appeared (but did not direct) in 1995's Othello.

Movies you didn't know were based on books!

Adaptation

Fresh City Life at Central is presenting The Bad Seed as a part of their film series this month and it made me think about other movies that I did not realize were based on books. Here are some others that I hadn't realized were inspired by novels:
