There were so many unknowns about the virus at the time but we knew it was the best decision for the health and safety of our customers and staff.

Over the past twelve months, our team has come together to innovate and deliver library services and programs in new ways. While our buildings have been closed to the public, our staff has been in our locations working behind the scenes to provide access to our collection via curbside pick up, bridge the digital divide via providing outdoor laptop access, and conduct outreach to our community via book giveaways, passing out care kits, and so much more.

We have also been working to reopen our public spaces in a safe way knowing that the pandemic continues. While we are not out of the woods, we are delighted to announce that nine of our branch libraries will open to the public on Tuesday, March 9. The Bear Valley Branch Library, Ross-Cherry Creek Branch Library, Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Branch Library, Green Valley Ranch Branch Library, Hampden Branch Library, Sam Gary Branch Library, Ross-University Hills Branch Library, Valdez-Perry Branch Library, and Westwood Branch Library will all open to the public during this first phase of our reopening plans. For more about hours and what to expect, visit the COVID-19 information and updates page.

Our 2021 commitments to the community include providing access to our collection, providing technology access, and providing access to our public spaces. We’re pleased to make this step toward fulfilling our community commitments and assist our community in recovering from the pandemic while keeping safety top of mind.

We have learned a lot over the past year and are proud of the resilience of our staff and community. Many of the innovations made during our public closure will be here to stay as life returns to normal like curbside service, laptop checkouts and virtual programming and events.

Welcome back to your library, we are excited to see you.

Sincerely,
Michelle Jeske
City Librarian

Library News

covid-19

Tue, 09 Mar 2021 17:02:05 +0000 Michelle 558308 at https://www.denverlibrary.org Letter to the Community from City Librarian Michelle Jeske https://www.denverlibrary.org/covid-update-michelle Letter to the Community from City Librarian Michelle Jeske

Michelle October 21, 2020

Dear Library Community,

Since we closed our doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic seven months ago, we’ve been serving our community in new ways. We know you, our customers, are anxious to walk back through our doors and we are anxious to welcome you back. Our teams have been working hard to plan for reopening and we had hoped that we could make the announcement that we would be reopening several branches this month. However, due to rising COVID-19 case numbers in Denver, we have had to postpone our plans. We know this is disappointing for you and it is for us as well but we are continuing to prioritize the safety of our staff and customers.

At this time we do not have a new target date to reopen our locations. We are working closely with public health officials and monitoring the data to inform a new opening date.

When we do reopen you can expect us to open with a limited number of locations geographically spread across the city with limited hours and limited capacity to start. Our locations will also look a little different with meeting rooms, study rooms and ideaLABS closed and furniture and technology spaced out to allow for physical distancing. We’ve also installed sneeze guards at our points of service and have already begun disinfecting high touch surfaces frequently. Customers will be asked to wear a face covering when in the buildings and initially, to refrain from eating inside our locations - though covered drinks will be welcome.

We hope to phase in the reopening of other branches after some initial branches are able to open. The Smiley and Byers Branch Libraries remain under construction for planned renovations through 2020. The Central Library is also about to undergo planned renovations and will not reopen until at least mid-2021.

This pandemic has changed almost everything about all of our lives and has been challenging for all of us. We know the community relies on us for resources, services, programs and safe spaces. Please know that your library is still here for you, just in different ways.

While we work to set a new reopening date, you are still able to access our programs and services virtually or on the phone, place holds for curbside pick up, use laptops outdoors at several locations, or visit a Bookmobile stop.

We hope that you are staying safe and hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,
Michelle Jeske
City Librarian

Library News

covid-19

Wed, 21 Oct 2020 15:29:48 +0000 Michelle 452060 at https://www.denverlibrary.org New Virtual Programs, New Virtual Services, New Ways to Connect https://www.denverlibrary.org/blog/library-news/james/virtual-services-during-closure New Virtual Programs, New Virtual Services, New Ways to Connect

Michelle March 26, 2020

Dear Library Community,
<pdespite being="" closed="" locations="" our="">
We encourage you to connect with us in new ways:

Access our virtual services:

Virtual Library, Anytime (books, entertainment, and services in your home)

Gathered for You (virtual resources selected by Denver Public Library)

Engage with us Online (book clubs, storytime, programs)

Chat with a librarian 24/7 or email a question

Access Spanish language resources on bibliotecadenver.org

Follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for community conversations and all the up to the minute news. Books come and go, internet sites flash then fade and a library is nothing without the people who call it their own.

Over the years, we’ve taken a strong pride in designing programs and services for the unique neighborhoods and communities that each of our branch libraries serves. We grieve with the survivors, victims, and their families in the aftermath of yet another horrific event.

This week’s events in Georgia are a culmination of continuing acts of violence experienced by the Asian and Pacific Islander communities over the past year. They are also reflective of the violence these communities have endured at all points of US history, including our local history here in Denver. Although this week’s events have not been classified as hate crimes, we must dig deeper to understand the underlying racist and xenophobic narratives that have led us here. These violent acts are based on discrimination and white supremacy. We condemn all forms of racial violence and are committed to supporting the culture change required to bring this hatred to an end.

As an organization, we have a role and responsibility to challenge racism in our community. Our vision is a strong community where everyone thrives. We stand committed to learning and growing in matters of racial equity as well as examining our roles in perpetuating inequitable systems. The event, held virtually this year, is a signature part of the library’s Black History Month celebration.

Annually, Denver Public Library along with the Library Commission honors African American men, women, and youth who have made outstanding contributions to the Denver Metro area through the Juanita Gray Community Service Awards. Juanita Gray was a former library staff member and community advocate. The awards were established in 1988 to honor Gray’s legacy, dedication, and advocacy of the African American community. Each year, the Juanita Gray Awards committee consisting of community and library staff members ask the community for their nominations and selects a winner.

The 2021 Juanita Gray Community Service Award recipients are: Terri Lynn Smith Gentry (top Image on the left), Jason McBride, (fourth image on the left) and Tay Anderson (second image on the left). The Youth Award recipient is Jayla Hemphill (third image on the left).

A third generation Denverite, Terri Lynn Smith Gentry is an interior designer and owner of A Terrific Design; she is also a sales manager at Joy’s Consigned Furnishings. Gentry is a board member of the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center. She conducts museum and walking tours and gives presentations to schools, community groups, government agencies, and businesses.

Hailing from a family of educators, Tay Anderson is an At-Large Director on the Denver Public Schools Board of Education. He has dedicated his life to protect the rights of women, African Americans, Latinx, LGBTQIA, Indigenous, Muslim, and disabled persons. Anderson has participated in public demonstrations and dialogues with school district leaders, state leaders, and members of Congress.

Jayla Hemphill is the 2021 Youth Award recipient. The 2021 Youth Award includes a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Visible. Hemphill is a high school senior and community activist. She was a speaker at the Denver Public Schools Black Lives Matter rally and participated in the Be the Change event. Additionally, she delivered a speech at a gun control rally advocating for gun laws at the Colorado State Capitol. Hemphill is an active member of Students Demand Action and has been instrumental in the effort to recruit teachers of color for employment for her school.

Jason McBride is a champion for our youth. Born and raised in Park Hill, he has worked in the East Denver community since 2010. He hosts an annual school supply drive as well as gives out hot lunches. McBride hopes to show young people in our community there are options in education and expose them to different career choices.

This year’s nominees also included Dr. Joyce Brooks, Sandy Douglas, Bishop Kevin Foreman, Elijah Huff, Ari Lipscomb, Janice McDonald, Jonathan McMillan, LaDios Muhammed, Maedella Stiger, LaDawn Sullivan, Marcus Weaver, and Sondra Young.

“The Denver Public Library is so proud to host this annual event honoring unsung heroes in our city,” said Michelle Jeske, Denver’s City Librarian. “All of this year’s nominees are truly exceptional and we salute their commitment to our community.”

The library is offering several virtual events and programs in honor of Black History Month, they can be found here.

Library News

Black History Month

Mon, 08 Feb 2021 19:30:00 +0000 dcochran 547262 at https://www.denverlibrary.org Chromebooks and Internet Hotspots Now Available to Borrow! https://www.denverlibrary.org/blog/library-news/stacey/chromebooks-and-internet-hotspots-now-available-borrow Chromebooks and Internet Hotspots Now Available to Borrow!

stacey February 1, 2021

Almost 20% of Denver households still do not have broadband service at home, and low-income households and vulnerable groups are much less likely to have access.
