This is a fascinating, moving story of family love and mostly of loss. Fictionalizing what might have been a true animal-human research scenario, Rosemary narrates the story of her siblings and parents and how her unconventional family shaped their lives. There are quite a few horrible depictions of cruelty and suffering animals have experienced in research experiments and testing and these scenes are hard to listen to. As much as one wants to pretend it doesn't happen and turn away, it's long been a part of scientific research. The book makes lots of observations and determinations about the practice of animal testing. It provides lots of food for thought with no easy answers.
