by Larry McMurtry

Reviewer Rating:

To be honest, I found this McMurtry satire of overindulged Europeans visiting the 1830's American West rather overstuffed: with language, characters, details, and slapstick humor that frequently verged on the sadistic. However, I did find the narrator of this audiobook, Henry Strozier, quite astounding. Strozier is required to voice men, women, adults, children, aristocrats from England, a French Madmoiselle and a German Fraulien, frontiersmen, Native Americans and an aged parrot, all of which he does with aplomb. Though I enjoyed the actual story only intermittently, the narration was uniformly excellent and kept me listening. I would recommend any title narrated by Strozier, as he is a true master of his craft.
