Reviewer Rating:

This is an early entry into Box's popular Joe Pickett series. Pickett is a Wyoming game warden who, in this mystery/thriller, gets caught up in a war between environmental activists and extreme ranchers. I liked the shifting perspectives, and the descriptions of the Wyoming landscape, the plot moved along at a steady pace as the tension ramped up. The bits of history sprinkled in, both of ranchers hiring their own version of law enforcement, and of the canyon the book is named after, were much appreciated. Try this series if you like a no-nonsense protagonist who will do the right thing no matter what or if you like mysteries where the setting is both important and well-described.
