Reviewer Rating:

Growing up in a poverty and famine-ridden near future, Wade Watts, like most of humanity, spends the majority of his waking hours plugged in to a virtual reality simulator to escape the horror of his daily existence. Wade becomes obsessed with a contest within this virtual utopia that involves solving a series of puzzles based on the video games and pop culture of the 1980's. The contest grows increasingly difficult and the violence of the game begins to emerge in the real world. With equal parts suspense and nostalgia, Ernest Cline has crafted a fun, fast-paced dystopian novel. Although there's a little something here for everyone to like, it will resonate most strongly with readers who grew up in the 80's. Highly recommended.
