Reviewer Rating:

A taunt, intense read for fans of psychological thrillers. The full story is just out of reach in this debut novel, written as a long letter from Rachel to her dear childhood friend Clara.

Rachel grew from a frumpy, overweight kid into a sleek, successful newscaster, who tried to stay in contact with the alluring, if aloof, Clara--her friend and idol from the day they met in 8th grade. After regularly ignoring Rachel's phone calls, Clara had agreed to meet Rachel and other grade school friends, but never showed. The next day, Rachel attends a press conference only to find that it is about Clara, who was reported missing the night before.

What unfolds is a mosaic of snapshots of Rachel and Clara's past that portray Clara as viciously self-focused and Rachel as an increasingly unreliable narrator.
