Reviewer Rating:

Melanie thinks she has a dilemma: how to tell the state of North Dakota she is gay.  In reality, Melanie's memoir is more about reconciliation and acceptance. Her journey back to herself is told by the landscape and the people she once called home. No interaction is too small to provide moments of clarity. A chance encounter with a park ranger offers insight: "We think everything is such a big deal, but in the scheme of things, our time here is nothing. All we have is what we surround ourselves with." Beautifully written with unflinching honesty, Melanie comes to realize "the acceptance we extend to others even when we cannot accept ourselves, is one of our greatest gifts of holiness."
