by Louise Erdrich

Reviewer Rating:

This compilation of poetry spans two decades and covers a wide range of topics and styles. I know Erdrich as a novelist whose novels are written in a poetic, sometimes elliptical fashion, which made her poetry seem familiar. My favorite section was the last, a section of short poems under the name Asiniig. (Asin is the Ojibwe word for stone.) Though the entire collection strongly reflects Erdrich's Ojibwe ancestry and connection to the natural world, each of these poems seemed to me to be filled with the concentrated power of language and belief in the natural world.
