by Neil Gaiman

Reviewer Rating:

I don't read horror - I'm a chicken and I have a very vivid imagination, particularly associated with the written word.  However, Gaiman balances the young narrator horrible, fearful experiences with the wonder and wisdom of three women who befriend and protect him.  The women are the characters who've stayed with me after I finished the book.  They are the archetypal earth mothers - strong, vengeful against evil, funny, loving, sensible.  The beginning of the book is scary, but the end of the book is brilliantly beautiful.
