by Nina Milton

Reviewer Rating:

This novel started out promisingly. The protagonist, Sabbie Dare, is British, female, and a working shaman. She is an engaging, unusual character, and the details of her life and the work that pulls her into a police investigation are quite fascinating. Unfortunately, the last third of the novel descends into formulaic violence that I found unneccessary and dismaying, and plotting that I found absurd and unbelievable. Though I enjoyed the first part of the novel immensely, the last section essentially ruined the entire novel for me. However, Nina Milton might be a mystery author to watch if she can resist the temptation to use violence as a plot device. She could be using her formidable creativity and well developed writing skills to expand the genre, not reduce it to the all too common violence and sadism that seem to have invaded it.
