by Mario Alberto Zambrano

Reviewer Rating:

Lotería is a dark tale told from the perspective of a young Mexican girl punctuated by vivid illustrations of lotería cards. The cards act as vignettes that slowly reveal the causes of why narrator Luz Castillo is in foster care while her sister is in the intensive care unit, her father is in jail, and her mother is missing. These journal entries to God are both sweetly poetic and full of disturbing twists, making Zambrano's first novel both charming and bleak, which is yet another accomplishment for the former professional ballet dancer!
