Travel author, Maarten Troost, has taken us to Kiribati, Vanuatu, Fiji, and now he heads to another Asian nation: China.  His no-nonsense relating of actual living conditions gives the average person a view of China that no guide book has gotten past the Chinese state censors.  Through his excellent use of vocabulary he gives the reader a real sense of what it is like to cohabit in cities with 20 million people who still haven’t seemed to figure out how to build a sanitation infrastructure to equal the magnificent scale of the Great Wall or Three Gorges Dam.  His book shows the complexity of a nation bustling with people who are just trying to make it in their developing world.  This book is a great read for anyone who might want to take a leap into traveling this massive country, or might just want a little more insight into the world we think we already know and understand.  I guarantee this book will change almost anyone’s perspective on this country.
