Reviewer Rating:

Originally written in Korean, and a bestseller in Korea for over 10 years, this is a modern day fable about freedom, identity, strength and longing. Sprout is a laying hen who has always wanted to get out into the yard, and, even more than that, to keep one of the eggs she lays and bring up a chick. A series of events find her out in the world, friends with a shunned Mallard duck named Straggler, and eventually, yes, raising Baby. She faces loneliness, barnyard animals that won't accept her, and danger in the form of a hungry weasel, and learns about love, determination, and sacrifice. A quick read, but the larger themes will keep you thinking about Sprout for a long time.
