by Regina Calcaterra

Reviewer Rating:

Etched in Sand, is a disturbingly beautiful memoir. Regina Calcaterra recounts her and her siblings horrific childhood made so by her mentally-ill and alcoholic mother. Regina and her four siblings were often subjected to severe verbal and physical abuse as well as neglect. Amazingly, they all survived while living in extreme poverty and often homelessness. Their mother often left them for months at a time, wondering how they would feed themselves, with the older children taking care of their younger siblings at all costs. They were often driven to steal for their very survival. They were almost afraid of social services and being split up as much as they feared their mother. This riveting memoir is a superb and sad story of a girl who against all odds becomes an educated woman, who wants nothing more than to remain close to her siblings.
