Like many others, I wanted to read this book before the movie came out.  While reading the book, I found I had to work to suspend disbelief that 6 to 10 year olds (boys, no less) could have the emotional/psychological wherewithal to handle the training and the "game".  I became engaged with the story and characters, though.  I saw Ender's Game as a sci-fi spin on a classic fairy tale format: where the children can be wise beyond their years, the parents and not even close to being effective, where evil is not always embodied by the ugliest creatures and even the truly horrifying is survivable.

I won't include a spoiler, but I did enjoy the plot twists in the last parts of the book.
