Reviewer Rating:

The Duchess is the first romance novel I've ever read.  My taste in books runs toward meatier material, so I approached this book expecting not to like it.  I was fairly pleasantly surprised that I did enjoy it at least a bit.  The clever, beautiful girl on the brink of financial ruin; the handsome, mysterious, black sheep with the heart of gold; the wicked mother-in-law, etc were all predictable characters, but enjoyable none the less.  The story, too, I found a bit lacking - 200 pages establishing the characters, 25 pages of bodice-rippping, and then 7 pages to wrap up all of the story lines.  I'm glad that I read The Duchess.  How else would I be sure that I'm not wild about the romance genre.
