“Which is harder: devising an unsolvable problem, or solving that problem?”   This question posed by main character Manabu Yukawa becomes a theme in The Devotion of Suspect X, written by one of Japan’s most celebrated crime novelists, Keigo Higashino.  It won the prestigious Naoki Prize for Best Novel— the Japanese equivalent of the National Book Award and the Man Booker Prize.
When her violent ex-husband shows up and threatens to kill their daughter, single mother Yasuko strangles him.  Her brilliant mathematician neighbor, Ishigami, devises a masterful cover-up of the crime to protect her.
This is a classic puzzler mystery.  Physics professor Yukawa lends his aid and superior investigative prowess to the lead detective on the case.  Only he and the most astute of readers may guess at the final twists to this gripping “howdunit” plot or intuit the depth of Ishigami’s devotion to the murderess.
