Wise-cracking, super tough Chicago P.I. and fighter for truth and justice V.I. Warshawski returns! This is a multi-layered story that starts in Chicago, with Vic searching for a young math/physics/programming genius who has disappeared. The story then moves back and forth in time, from W.W. II Germany to the postwar United States and the present day. Once again, Vic runs afoul of corruption within established institutions and is forced to fight her way out of a nasty looking frame job. Paretsky uses the novel to take on modern issues (like concerns about the invasion of privacy made possible by technology and the difficulty of going on the lam in our current culture of government surveillance) while staying true to her postmodern noir vision of the individual forced to fight against larger forces. Well done, ladies!
