A Child's Calendar presents a poem and corresponding illustration for each month of the year, great for teaching children about the seasons and the months of the year.  The illustrations, by Caldecott winner Trina Schart Hyman, of multicultural/multiracial families are especially nice for children who don't often see their families represented in picture books.  This book would make a wonderful gift for anyone attending a book-themed baby shower or just looking for a gift for small children.  One of my favorite passages, from "March":

The mud smells happy

On our shoes.

We still wear mittens,

Which we lose.
