Briony's life is one long waiting game for the next adventure of her favorite dystopian novel, The Adventures of Starling Black. But it isn't enough to read about Starling, the beautiful spell-casting exorcist. Briony wants to be strong and powerful just like Starling. And when she completes the very last book of Starling's adventures, Briony jumps into her own adventure with the help of her dead grandmother. The art work conveys the confusion and sadness of not being accepted nor understood, as well as compassion and joy as Briony moves beyond the opinion of others and accepts herself. There is one graphic panel of sexual activity but as Briony notes, "I am a child of the Internet age and have a very good imagination."
