Reviewer Rating:

Bren is not as she has always been. Once a sentient spaceship with many human bodies to inhabit, she is now in just one body, alone, angry, and in mourning. Told with flashbacks moving along in time with the current situation, you come to understand the politics and scope of a well imagined universe.  Gender isn’t used or really recognized by the imperialist Radch, which makes for some intriguing storytelling that will challenge your expectations of gender. A compelling story, with an interesting and well fleshed out world,  this book is the first of a trilogy. If you’re looking for some exceptional sci-fi that has women as people and not tropes, this is the book for you.
