Dreaming New Dreams Through Poetry

In celebration of National Poetry Month in April and Older Adults Month in May, we invite you to a special class to view and understand life through the lens of poetry.

The writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez said, “It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.”

In this weekly poetry workshop, we’ll explore how poems by Mary Oliver, Sharon Olds, Ellen Bass, Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, and many other poets can guide us to celebrate the aging process, dream new dreams, and live joyful lives. We’ll also learn some fundamentals of poetic craft, write new poems, and get feedback on our work. The workshop will meet on Zoom.

This virtual workshop runs on a drop-in basis, meaning you are welcome to come to as many or as few sessions as you like. Please register to receive the Zoom link, or email olderadults@denverlibrary.org.

Instructor Bio: Kimberly O’Connor is a North Carolina native who lives in Golden, Colorado, where she teaches for Lighthouse Writers Workshop and Colorado School of Mines. She received an MFA from the University of Maryland and earned her undergraduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Kim’s poetry has been published in B O D Y, Copper Nickel, Colorado Review, Harvard Review, Mid-American Review, Slice, storySouth, THRUSH, and elsewhere. Her book White Lung was a finalist for the 2022 Colorado Book Award in poetry and won the 2022 Brockman-Campbell Book Award, a prize sponsored by the North Carolina Poetry Society for the best book of poetry published by a North Carolina poet during the past year.
