Shelley Read is a fifth generation Coloradoan who lives with her family at 9,000 feet elevation in the Elk Mountains of the Western Slope. Her debut novel, Go as a River, is inspired by her ancestors and the wild landscape where she wanders and wonders. It tells the story of seventeen-year-old Victoria Nash, who runs the household on her family's peach farm in the small ranch town of Iola, Colorado - the sole surviving female in a family of troubled men. When she meets a drifter, Wilson Moon, who looks and sounds different than anyone around her, she takes a chance to find happiness. This choice has tragic results, forcing Victoria to make the most difficult decision of her life. Set in 1948, before Iola was flooded to create the Blue Mesa Reservoir, Read paints a realistic picture of life and agricultural work on Colorado’s Western Slope.
