Temporary Ross-Cherry Creek Branch Library Closure

Closure Updates

Update as of May 16, 2023

Last week we learned that after the most recent structural review of the Ross-Cherry Creek Branch Library, the engineers and our partners at Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) have confirmed that the building can be reoccupied and the building can be reopened.

This is good news but we have a lot to do to be ready to reopen including doing some maintenance work and hiring staff   which will take some time. At this point we do not have a timeline to reopen.

We expect that we will be able to have some of our facilities staff on site over the next several weeks to evaluate what needs to be done. We are eager to reopen to our community but will not do so until we can ensure all of the pieces are in place. Stay tuned for more information on when we can welcome you back.

While the building temporarily remains closed, the closest library locations, which remain open are the Eugene Field Branch Library located at 810 South University Boulevard or the Schlessman Family Branch Library located at 100 Poplar Street.

Update as of April 14, 2023

The new structural review of the building was completed in the first quarter of this year. Based on recommendations in the new report, we now have a firm understanding of what repairs will need to be made to ensure the building’s structural integrity. These necessary repairs will allow us to occupy the building so it can eventually reopen.

We are working with our partners at the City to make a plan to get the repairs made. The repair completion timeline will ultimately determine when the building can be reoccupied first by staff and then by the public. All repairs will need to go through the City’s procurement process, which can take some time.

We know customers are eager to have the library back in place in the community and we look forward to welcoming you back when we can open our doors again. While the building temporarily remains closed, we are continuing our efforts to look for ways to bring library services to the community. The closest library locations, which remain open are the Eugene Field Branch Library located at 810 South University Boulevard or the Schlessman Family Branch Library located at 100 Poplar Street.

Update as of February 3, 2023

We expect the new structural assessment to begin sometime in the first quarter of this year. While the branch remains closed, we are exploring ways to bring library services to the community. We know customers are eager to have the library back in place in the community and we hope to be able to do so when we can safely open our doors again.

Update as of  January 9, 2023

The branch remains closed for further structural review at this time - for more information, see the community update letter below. At this time, we do not have an estimated date for when the new structural study will begin.

We are currently exploring ways to bring library service to the community.

Update as of October 26, 2022

Ross-Cherry Creek Branch community update letter

Please join us for a drop in  open house for the community on Thursday, November 3 from 8-10am at Aviano Coffee on 2nd & Saint Paul. We don’t anticipate having any new information then but plan to use this time to connect and hear your questions.

Update as of September 30, 2022

A contractor has been analyzing the structure this summer and recently completed the last phase of the analysis. Based on the report to be completed soon, Denver Public Library and Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) will work together to determine the necessary steps to correct issues and damages. Please be aware that Denver Public Library and DOTI will need to issue a bid for this work to follow the City’s procurement process. No further information is known at this time.

Update as of July 27, 2022

The Ross-Cherry Creek Branch Library is temporarily closed until further notice. Reopening the branch remains a high priority and we are committed to reopening the branch as soon as possible. The safety of staff and customers is a top priority as we are working with contractors who are currently in the last phase of testing the stability of the structure to determine mediation steps. Contractors are expected to complete their review by the end of July and will provide their findings to the library. Based on the findings, the library and City will take necessary steps to correct issues and damages.

Please be aware that DPL will need to go through the City’s contracting process to get a contractor on board to do this work. DPL and the City and County of Denver will ensure resources are allocated to make corrections. We know you are eager to have the library open and we hope to be able to do so when we can safely open our doors again. We will continue to update this page with updates.

Services
Please be aware that all services at the branch will be unavailable during this time, including collections, phone lines, and the book drop.

Due to the nature of this review, the building cannot be occupied while it is completed. We anticipate this initial work will take approximately six months, at which time the next steps will be determined which may extend the closure.

Please be aware that all services at the branch will be unavailable during this time, including collections, phone lines, and the book drop.

Existing holds can be picked up at Eugene Field Branch Library. The closest branches are Eugene Field and Schlessman Family Branch Libraries. We look forward to opening up later this year.
