Have you seen last year's Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film? Perhaps you should.
El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes) is a suspenseful Argentinian film that is not only beautifully filmed, but also superbly acted. If you're not someone who looks forward to happy endings, but are more the type who appreciates a film in which there can be no happy ending, El secreto de sus ojos might be right up your alley.
The main character, Benjamin, aspires to write a novel based on a rape and murder case he investigated decades earlier when he worked as a federal agent. For a good portion of the film Benjamin reflects upon the past as he remember the details of the case, his communications with the victim's widower, and a romantic interest in his then-supervisor.
This one is part murder mystery and part love story, but without any of the fluff or filler that often ruins what would otherwise be fantastic flicks. Some might complain that El secreto runs a little bit too long, but I didn't have any problem sticking with it until the bitter end -- and it is a bitter end.
This was a great film! I watched it with my Argentine wife who lived through the dictatorship (key part of the film) and we both loved it. The ending is truly a "gotcha" worth seeing.
Yes! I saw this back when it was in the theaters. An excellent film on so many levels. Highly recommended!
Simplemente, la mejor película argentina de la historia.
