Richard Castle is inspired by mystery novelists and TV writers like Stephen J. Cannell and James Patterson. Both best-selling authors make cameos on the television show. The first book written by Castle, Heat Wave, was not only featured in the show but was an important plot point in one of last season's episodes. Recently at Comic-Con, Nathan Fillion, the actor who plays Richard Castle, read a steamy passage from Heat Wave with hilarious results.
Fans of Castle may also enjoy the show Bones about forensic anthropologist and mystery author Temperance Brennan and her FBI partner, Seely Booth. Bones is loosely based on a series of mystery novels by real life forensic anthropologist and author, Kathy Reichs. One of my favorite inside jokes on the show is that the name of the character that Temperance writes about is the name of her real-life author, Kathy Reichs.
