Books on CD the whole family can enjoy

Traveling for the holidays? Is a long car trip with the kids in your immediate future? How about some audio book suggestions to help the time pass quickly and keep the whole family entertained.

My family and I have enjoyed these titles on recent car trips:

Point Blank, book 2 in the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz.  Both my husband and my 8 year old son were especially caught up with this one even without having read or listened to the first. Alex is a teenage boy caught up in the English spy world and sent on dangerous missions despite (or maybe because of) his young age. Plenty of action and intrigue in these books. We already have the next title in the series lined up for another upcoming car trip.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith, read by Lisette Lecat.  The reader is absolutely fantastic, and even though this is a series written primarily for an adult audience, my son was enthralled by the fun story lines, colorful characters, and taste of Botswana culture. We listened to The Miracle at Speedy Motors, book 9 in this series, and again my husband and son both enjoyed it without having read or listened to the previous books, but I would recommend starting with the first.

The Emerald Atlas by John Stephens, read by Jim Dale.  Jim Dale is a legendary reader, and has also narrated the Harry Potter audio books (another good choice). He really makes the characters come alive with their own distinctive voices. In The Emerald Atlas three children are shuttled from orphanage to progressively worse orphanage until they arrive at a mysterious castle where they are the only orphans. They find a magic book and are thrown into a dangerous fight against a witch, trying to save the village and its children from her evil clutches, while also trying to solve the mystery of their parents' disappearance.

Peter & the Starcatchers series by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, read by Jim Dale.  These books are prequels to the Peter Pan story explaining how this young boy becomes Peter Pan while helping the Starcatchers in their quest to keep the mysterious stardust from falling into the wrong hands.

If you have an IPod or MP3 player and the accessories to allow you to listen through your car stereo, don't forget to check out the audio eBooks available through our eMedia catalog. It's great to be able to download and listen without having to deal with all those CDs.

Wishing you happy travels and fun listening on the way!
