Plaza Voices: Remembering the Dead

With Halloween creeping up right around the corner, you’ve probably also seen the iconic skull (calavera) and skeleton decorations commonly associated with the Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos. Did you know Día de los Muertos is a public holiday in Mexico, and did not always coincide so directly with Halloween celebrations? Prior to 16th century colonization, it was celebrated during the beginning of summer, its roots going back almost 3,000 years to traditional Aztec festivities.

Now that the whole snow thing is out of the way, it's time to think about summer. Colorado hosts some amazing music festivals. Big and small, single day and weekend affairs, there is something for almost everyone to enjoy.

To kick off the summer, my family is trying out Meadowgrass Music Festival near Colorado Springs on Memorial Day weekend. In its 6th year, Meadowgrass may be smaller (and more affordable) than it's Planet Bluegrass rivals, but it's beginning to draw larger crowds and a notable lineup.

Five Points Jazz Festival This Weekend

The Five Points Jazz Festival is this Saturday, May 22nd and starts at 1pm.

The lineup on the KUVO main stage includes the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Park Hill Brass, The Elevation Jazz Orchestra and many more. Best of all, it's free!
