'Tis the season to hear Holiday music everywhere you go. Whether you are trimming the tree, wrapping presents or just snuggled up front of the fireplace (or the Yule Log channel in my case) here are some classic Holiday carol selections to keep you merry and bright.
Double albums are generally released as such because the recording is longer than the capacity of the medium, either records or CDs. To make the list compilation more specific, live albums, compilations, reissues with bonus discs and box sets were excluded (to be featured another time). Which is your favorite double album?
Melody Gardot is a jazz singer and an amazing, inspirational person that I am thankful for learning about at the library! Her story is not without tragedy. At the age of 19, she was hit by a car and as a result of extensive damage ended up with severe neurological complications that she continues to deal with to this day. Using music as a form of therapy, she has risen to be one of the most enticing jazz singers I have ever heard.
Gardot's first album, Worrisome Heart came out in 2008. In 2009, she released My One and Only Thrill. Ms Gardot continues to advocate for music therapy and inspire those that face overwhelming obstacles.
Miley Ray Cyrus, born Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992, celebrates her 18th birthday today! The daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley rose to fame through her role as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana on the Disney sitcom, Hannah Montana.
Celebrate National Native American Heritage Month by taking note of tremendous music honoring the traditions and experiences of the indigenous peoples of North America. Native American music often features flute and drums and can be spiritually healing or provide a rousing rhythm to move to.
I was recently introduced to the album, Good Things by Aloe Blacc. Hidden among his soulful original gems is a fantastic cover of Femme Fatal by The Velvet Underground. The genius of this cover is that it doesn't sound like a cover. It has the feeling of the original but sounds completely different. That got me thinking about other cover songs that I love.
On Veteran's Day, we take the time to honor those that have served our country. It is important to remember that these individuals play other valuable roles in our society as well. Among other things, some veterans have gone on to become famous musicians!
Floating away from his studio in N.Y. to the sun and beaches of L.A., Dave Sitek inflates his solo project with so much talent it is ready to pop. From David Byrne to Karen O to guest appearances by Tunde & Kyp, you can be sure that the Maximum Balloon is here to brighten up any party.
When a musical prodigy such as Dave Sitek decides to do a solo album, fans worry.....Will he grab for the dollars and fill it with tracks featuring Kanye West and Lady Gaga? Will he discover South American cowboy music and try to feed to the masses? Will it sound completely different because he recorded it on the West Coast? Will he go acoustic???? Luckily for his fans, none of these scenarios are the case and what you get is another piece of musical genius by a producer who can do no wrong.
