80 years ago this week, the Star-Spangled Banner was designated the national anthem of the United States by Act of Congress (on Mar. 3, 1931, to be exact.) The words were written by Francis Scott Key during the bombardment of Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Sept. 13-14, 1814.
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
A video game version of the F. Scott Fitzgerald treasure, The Great Gatsby, made for the Nintendo NES, was unearthed at a garage sale and is now available to play online. Fitzgerald is admittedly one of my favorite authors, Gatsby a classic I hold dear, plus I'm a big geek, so I admit my bias, but anyone would have fun playing this game!
Jane Russell, pin-up girl and Hollywood heartthrob, sadly passed away on Monday evening in her home. Signed to a seven-year contract by billionaire Howard Hughes, Jane Russell appeared in movies with Robert Mitchum, Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope. She details much of her life in her autobiography, Jane Russell: My Path & My Detours.
America has decided to dedicate a whole month to frozen food. While I enjoy the convenience I hardly think frozen food deserves an entire month of attention. So I am hereby declaring March to now be Cook-Something-For-Yourself month!
While I am very lucky in that I get to cook dinner three to four times a week I understand that not everyone is as driven or privileged. This month, though, I want you all to make a concerted effort to prepare and enjoy a meal made from scratch all for you! Here are a couple resources to get you inspired and perhaps carried away (I almost said curried away! ; } )
