Summer is a time for playing outside, relaxing, and watching the latest summer blockbuster at your local cinema.
A bonus for this year: 3 superhero movies! The Avengers was amazing, and while I haven’t gotten a chance to see the new Spiderman yet, it sounds like it’s pretty good as well. Last but not least? The new Batman movie, of course! Even though Bane (the villian) looks more like Jaws from The Spy Who Loved Me (or maybe Hayden Christiansen’s Darth Vader wearing headgear?), I’ll still give it a whirl. If you’re looking for more superhero related stuff, here’s a sampling of some of the awesome things we have at the library.
Books with superheroes:
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. Takes place during the golden age of comics and really captures the excitement of the times. It made me go back and read some of our collection of golden age comics.
Super by Aaron Dietz – What if superheroes worked for the city like the police and had to fill out paperwork? A hilarious take on what it would be like to be a paid spandex-wearing upholder of justice.
Personally, I think they need to make a Birds of Prey movie. Except give Huntress a better costume and Oracle cooler glasses. Which superhero movie is your favorite?
Other fun superhero books: Hero by Perry Moore and After the Golden Age by Carrie Vaughn!
Another great book along the lines of Kavalier and Clay is Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem
Two somewhat related documentaries that are worth viewing: Superheroes (about the real-life superhero movement in the US) and Confessions of a Superhero (about the folks who dress up like superheroes on Hollywood Boulevard). Both are interesting and not exactly what you'd expect.
Thanks for the suggestions!
