New updates to our eBook/audio eBook catalog offer some exciting new options.

Suspend a Hold

Temporarily suspend a hold in your hold list. Your position will continue to advance in the queue while the hold is suspended, but the hold will not be filled until the specified time period has passed. Suspend your hold as you place it, or sign into your Account anytime to go to Holds, then Options.  This is ideal if you've been waiting for that popular title forever and now you're going on vacation, or your big project is coming due, or you have too many other books to read. More on Suspend a Hold.

Auto-Checkout

When Auto-checkout is selected, your title will be automatically checked out as soon as it becomes available to you. You will receive a notification when the title is available confirming that it has been checked out and can be found on Account Bookshelf. Auto-Checkout is the default setting. If you do not want your hold to check out automatically, uncheck the box next to "Automatically borrow this title when it becomes available." Users who do not choose this option will follow the current hold notification process. More about automatic checkout.

  • Pro: The advantage to Auto-checkout is that you don't have to worry about missing the 4 day (96 hour) window of time to check out your title.
  • Con: The disadvantage is that your checkout period will start at the moment the email notice is sent.
  • Tip: Check your Account Settings where you may want to adjust your checkout periods.

Maturity Settings

Two options to allow you to customize your browsing and discovery experience based on content maturity level now appear on the Account > Settings page. You must be signed in to your Account to limit your results by maturity setting.

Exclude certain content from browsing based on the maturity level (Juvenile, Young Adult, General Adult, and Mature Adult). This allows adult users to exclude titles for younger readers and young readers to exclude adult-only titles from their experience.

You will also now have the option to “mask” all Mature Adult cover images with a basic cover image.

To set these options, sign into your Account and select Settings.

“AND” Boolean Searching

AND, the pièce de résistance, the default search behavior has changed from “OR” to “AND.” You will now only see results that include ALL of your search terms. Your number of results returned for a search will be lower than with the previous behavior, but this change will meaningfully improve the relevancy of the results. If your result list is too narrow, try removing a search term.

Let us know what you think of these new features. I'm super excited about AND searching and Suspend Holds!

Why do my kindle holds disappear?

I was 28 on the list (20 books available), and it just disappeared.

Is there any way to stop that from happening?

A recent upgrade to our catalog requires that you log in to your eBook account with your library card and not your username in order to see your holds. We hope to resolve this as soon as possible. If you continue to have problems please submit an eBook help form and someone will assist you.

I love the auto check-out option! Kudos to you!

These options are wonderful, and I'm Positively Swooning at the "And" search default, no more swearing in exasperation at each search! Well, maybe still occasionally as still want it to read my mind, LOL!

I'm right there with you, Sandra.

These changes are fabulous - Thanks! I especially love the automatic checkout option - no more missed holds for me!

Great! It's one less step to get to your eBook. Glad you like it.

Awesome!
