Who are the Yezidis (Yazidis)?

We are hearing a lot about the Yezidis (or Yazidis) in northern Iraq and on Mount Sinjar. I'm embarrassed to say that I'd never heard of this group of people!

So who are they? What do they believe? What is their culture like?

Check out these great resources:

Yazidis: Worldmark Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life

Yezidis: Religions of the World: A Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Beliefs and Practices

Yezidis: Encyclopedia of World Cultures

The online encyclopedias used to research this topic are available in the Gale Virtual Reference Library, one of the databases available to customers of the Denver Public Library. Most of the databases are available remotely to customers with a Denver Public Library card.

I definitely had heard of these folks before when I was studying minorities in Iraq, and I was horrified to be hearing about them again in such a distressing context the way they've been in the news lately. One of the places I found useful for finding information on them back in the day was this tumblr blog (yes, it's worksafe): http://esotericandsyncreticreligions.tumblr.com/tagged/yazidi both in that tag and also some content outside of that tag.
