Arab American Heritage Month

The Denver Public Library is celebrating Arab American Heritage Month in April!

National Arab American Heritage Month celebrates Arab American heritage and culture and recognizes contributions and achievements of Arab community members to the nation.

The term “Arab” is a cultural and linguistic designation. The Arab world consists of 22 countries in the Middle East and North Africa that make up the Arab League: Algeria, Bahrain, the Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

About 3.7 million Americans have Arab roots, according to the Arab American Institute. Over 42,000 people in Colorado have Arab heritage, the majority from Somalia, Iraq, Sudan, Morocco, and Jordan. Nearly 7,200 people in Denver have Arab roots, and over 3,000 households in Denver county reported speaking Arabic at home in 2019.
