Classic Film Showing: Oklahoma! with Shirley Jones

It is arguably the finest musical ever translated to film. It's as big and colorful as the state it is named after; Oklahoma! debuts at the Denver Public Library Classic Film Series this Tuesday.

Oklahoma! (1955)
Tuesday, April 29, 6:30-9 p.m.
Central Library, Level B2 Conference Center

Directed by Fred Zinneman. Starring Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones.
No American musical has captured the ideals of westward expansion and manifest destiny like Oklahoma! The greatest stage production created by the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein, it loses nothing in the translation to celluloid. If anything, a huge Oklahoma sky, as big as the dreams of the main characters, fits more perfectly on a movie screen. See this classic musical on the big screen! 145 minutes. Not rated.

I wish I could go but I have a class that night. It's a wonderful movie. I'm listening to Shirley Jones' autobiography on audio book and she just fell into this roll with no experience at all, really. A true Cinderella story. I'd love to see it again knowing some of what went on behind the scenes.
