Death Becomes Her: Author Caitlin Doughty returns to Denver Public Library

International bestselling author Caitlin Doughty would like us all to relax a little bit about dying. “Accepting death doesn't mean you won't be devastated when someone you love dies. It means you will be able to focus on your grief, unburdened by bigger existential questions like, "Why do people die?" and "Why is this happening to me?" Death isn't happening to you. Death is happening to us all.” (quoted from her first book, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes)

She's the coolest, smartest and wittiest woman in the crematorium. Watch a couple episodes of her wildly popular web series, Ask a Mortician, and you'll know what I'm talking about. Returning to Denver with her latest book, From Here To Eternity (her exploration of death acceptance around the globe), Caitlin's visit will no doubt spark intellectual and existential conversation and thought. It can be fun to think about death, but it's even better when you can do it with friends! Mark your calendar:

Author talk and book signing with Caitlin Doughty

Saturday, October 21, 7-9 p.m. @ Postmodern Company, 2734 Walnut Street, Denver 80205

Caitlin Doughty thinks that Americans have too much distance between themselves and death. Whether our standoffish nature regarding death is compelled by fear of the unknown or just the mechanics of corporate greed, Caitlin has made it her mission to get us all comfortable with death. Her first book, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, was a memoir of how a young woman found herself working in a crematorium. From Here to Eternity reveals a selection of death practices and rituals from around the world. A deathtination guide -- as it were. In this beautifully written and illustrated book, Caitlin explores the varied world traditions around death and, at the same time, she writes eloquently about reforming Western attitudes about death, funerals and mourning. Death can be, for the living, revelatory, sad, deeply meaningful, cathartic and even humorous. And Caitlin captures all of this in her insightful and witty prose. Join Denver Public Library for this fascinating author event. Book signing to follow. Registration for this event will open on Monday, July 31. Seating is limited, please register at or call 720-865-1205. (Both of Ms. Doughty's books will be available for purchase at this event.)
