September 15-24, 2017 is Welcoming Week, a national event series that brings together immigrants, refugees, and receiving community members to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone.
Welcoming Week is part of Welcoming America, a nationwide network of local government and nonprofit organizations that work to create more welcoming communities for all, including immigrants. In Colorado, Denver and Westminster are government members, and the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition and Welcoming Colorado are local nonprofit members.
The Welcoming America website has a wealth of information for both organizations and individuals. Check out their Resource Library for toolkits, webinars, and community planning guides that address equity in education, healthcare, civic engagement, economic opportunity, and more.
The library is offering several events during Welcoming Week, including a big celebration on Saturday, September 23 from 1-3 p.m. at the Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales branch. Join us for art activities with the Denver Art Museum, performances by Arcinda and Mudra Dance Studio, and delicious food from the Vinh Xuong Bakery. This is a great opportunity for the whole family to have some fun, meet new neighbors, and show support for immigrants and refugees. Please join us!
Learn more about the Denver Public Library's Services to Immigrants and Refugees by visiting our web page. There you'll find schedules for citizenship programs, legal help sessions, and our innovative Plaza program. You'll also find quick links to online resources for immigrants and refugees, including our Resource Guide for New Americans, available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
Plazas are an open community space where immigrants from all over the world connect with people, information, and resources, building Denver’s global community. Come to practice a language, prepare for citizenship, pursue your goals, and create your future. Whatever you’re doing, we can help! Please see our events calendar for more information.
