Volunteer Staff Aide: RFID Assistant

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is an inventory control system that relies on a radio signal, rather than barcode scanning for the checking out and returning of materials. The Denver Public Library will be converting to RFID throughout 2009. Conversion entails the placement of an RFID tag on/in each item in the collection. Tagging is a simple 2-step process in which a volunteer or staff member scans the existing barcode using a barcode scanner, this programs the tag with the unique item number from the barcode. The staff member or volunteer then places the RFID tag on or in the item.
